One Life, Let it be a good one.

“What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult.”

Sigmund Freud.

I thought this may be a good way to start my blog. As we grow we inherit the opinions of others which can sometime influence our understanding or lack of understanding of our society and the way in which we interact with each other.

  1. What I was trying to say is that I think we are influenced by the social baggage of others and therefore behave accordingly. I would like to think that we can change the world by being more specific about the words that we use.

I think the words that we use on a day to day basis can be misinterpreted and therefore cause hurt, pain and conflict. What happened to being thoughtful, respectful and considerate?

  2. I agree, mindful, and respectful, mind-filled respect-filled careful/care-filled thought-filled approaches are ways to counter misinterpretation, but seldom do all things work this way. I cannot always depend upon people to grasp what I am trying to convey. I can only hope that my words will do no harm, or at least will connect in ways I initially anticipated... Free thinking has consequences... And yes, we all live out of other's social baggage, conforming to the "clothes" that others would have us "wear". But hey, this isn't always the case... to be continued...

woman, you, man------- tongue (something, don't know what the giny bit means)? have no idea what the next bit means?

you country he --------! K------ - d---. Missing bits in here but i think the next bit is you tree (lost now)

Not good, I need another dictionary. I do have one but I think it's limited.
Good to hear from you too.

I am listening to 6PR and the are discussing Malcolm Browns misdemeanour. Apparently he was doing a speech in Melbourne and called a couple of Aboriginal footballers canibals and he used the term Abo's. So once again we have the WORD. Now it seems some of the football world are making excuses for him. Now why would we do that? Basically he used words that are offensive and racist and we are supposed to not be angry at him. Lets be realistic if an aboriginal person had spoken out of turn in public there would be an uproar so big they would want to string him up or a least make him do time in jail. So lets not make excuses for him, lets make him responsible for the WORDS that come out of his mouth.

The WORD is very powerful and this just goes to prove my point. Be careful what you say.

  7. I agree, Mal has always been a redneck meathead.....

  8. My thoughts exactly, but some of the Nyoongar footballers who have played under him, reckon he is not a redneck, so that just leaves the impression that he really is a jock and there is not much between the ears.

The other thing that concerns me is the damage he may do to Nicky Winmar who seems to be a sensitive soul. I have done some reading up on him and it seems he has trouble dealing with racism and is unable to express himself in a positive way. I think footy has enhanced this issue and it bothers me that they keep giving him hard time when he hasn't played for over 10 years in the AFL. Now I don't follow footy much to my brothers disgust....lol he said he is going to teach me....lol but I am interested in the racism in sport so I googled up the pic of Winmar raising his jumper and it led me to research him. I want to know more about him because he is the perfect example of achievement in the face of adversity.

Carl Langdon was on the radio and he said when you are on the footy field any thing goes. What does that mean exactly. Does that mean when you play AFL all the social rules fly out the door. Why? I don't understand this?

  10. I have heard also that Mal is actually not a real racist in his dealings with Aboriginal people so like you I am confused about why the issue of 'blackness' keeps coming up, in rugby too. Just dumb.....unfortunately it's in the Ozzie macho culture to slag everyone off, even if they are your mates. I don't mind a bit of 'leg pulling' but I think some people just go too far.

I love the photo, what a beautiful tree. And I love your new-look blog...it's great how the words slide over the pics too.

  11. You know I was thinking about how Carl Langdon said once your on the footy field anything goes. But Mal wasn't on the footy field, he was standing at a podium delivering a public speech. I know he said he was trying to be funny and it back fired, but honestly does he really think that using language like Abo, is going to go down well with the Aboriginal community and calling them cannibals?

I have to tell you my dad thought the cannibals bit was really funny so he stirred my mum up till she got cranky and then they had a fight. It was kind of funny.

    It's all Mals fault...lol

  12. I meant calling us cannibals.... lol See I got mad just thinking about it and distanced myself from the whole sorry thing.... I do that some times when I don't want to deal with my issues.

  13. And now Australia begins the cycle of the domino effect. Amazing how we now have another footballer opening his big mouth. Today I feel tired and worn out. I thought we had moved past this need to express ourselves in racist terminology. Although i did like the response of the AFL boss, can't spell his name (enlighten me please someone) and I cannot be bothered to check it, but he said there is no excuse and it is time we joined the 21st century and that this sort of misconduct is not acceptable. It showed a powerful stance to stamp out racism and I think it sent a great message, and he actually looked convincing, but this whole thing is making me weary. We Aboriginal people have had to put up with this sort of lack of respect for a long time and to be honest I am oh so tired of it. When do we become people? Man I'm tired? I am going to have to go bush to recharge my batteries. Come on Sunday morning can't wait to go for a row... yea!!!
